Lucknow:  All set to bring a resolution in the state Assembly to split Uttar Pradesh into four states, Chief Minister Mayawati on Sunday asked BSP lawmakers to attend in full strength the Winter Session of Vidhan Sabha beginning today.

Issuing instructions to this effect to party MPs, MLAs and ministers at a meeting in Lucknow, she advised them to raise issues of public interest like corruption, Lokpal Bill and problems of the common man.

She also asked them to vehemently counter the Opposition charges in their respective Houses.

She said a resolution to reorganise Uttar Pradesh into four states would be presented and a vote on account tabled in the Vidhan Sabha.

Last week, the Chief Minister announced her plan to split UP into four smaller states - Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, Awadh Pradesh and Paschim Pradesh. She argued that the lack of development in Uttar Pradesh - usually the biggest complaint against her- is based on the state's unwieldy size of 75 districts.

So her blueprint assigns 22 eastern districts like Gorakhpur to Purvanchal.  According to the blueprint, Purvanchal will have 22 eastern districts of the state including Gorakhpur. Lucknow, the capital, would be a part of Awadh Pradesh which will have 14 districts. Bundelkhand has seven districts; Paschim Pradesh will get 22 districts and would include Meerut and Ghaziabad.

The opposition has dismissed the UP government's proposal as an election gimmick. "Small, unviable states will lead to Naxal activity and expose the nation's sensitive borders," Mulayam Singh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party had earlier said. His party plans to counter it by bringing a no confidence motion against the Mayawati government. With the expulsion of several BSP MLAs and their defection to opposition parties, the Samajwadi Party claims the Mayawati government has been reduced to a minority.

The resolution to split UP, if passed by the Assembly, will be sent to the Centre for its consideration
